Bow Types

Bow types and distances

Our members shoot a range of bows: Recurve, Compound, Barebow, Longbow, American Flatbow and occasionally Horsebow, so there is always someone on hand to give you advice and help.

Following a Health & Safety audit by the committee it was decided that new archers would have maximum outdoor distance limits set in the 1st instance. These limits keep the shoots running smoothly and help new archers “find their feet” as they start outdoor shooting. If you have come off a winter beginners course you will be limited to 50 metres/50 yards. Our Records Officer will increase your distance limit as you progress.

Please note it is not a requirement you shoot to your upper limit, you should shoot shorter distances at first and build up to your upper distance limitation slowly.

Any Member wishing to start shooting a Compound Bow, will need to be assessed for safety reasons by a compound archer, as these are very powerful bows, and if it is deemed necessary, receive further tuition by a compound archer/coach until safety concerns are met before shooting on Club Target Days. If you wish to use a compound bow, please contact the Club Secretary who will organise your assessment.
